Dr. Gabriel Löfvall
Dr. Gabriel Löfvall is Director of Music at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Hartford. In this role, he directs the Cathedral Schola Cantorum, a fully professional choir, and oversees a comprehensive music program that includes major archdiocesan liturgies, sacred concerts, and choral orchestral works in service of the Church’s worship and mission.
Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Dr. Löfvall began his musical formation as a chorister with the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo Boys’ Choir under the direction of Marcelo Coltro and studied piano with Dora de Marinis, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance. In 1997 he moved to the United States, where he completed Master’s Degrees in Piano Performance and Choral Conducting at the Hartt School of Music, University of Hartford, studying with Luiz de Moura Castro. He earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting in 2016 under the mentorship of Edward Bolkovac.
Dr. Löfvall began his ministry as a music director within the Archdiocese of Hartford in 2002 at St. Justin’s Church on Blue Hills Avenue, where he developed a vibrant liturgical music program in close collaboration with the parish’s Haitian Catholic community. He later served at St. Patrick’s Parish in Farmington, where he built a strong choral program and led the choir on international pilgrimages and concert tours to Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Ireland.
From 2009 to 2025, Dr. Löfvall served as Music Director at St. Patrick St. Anthony Church in Hartford, working in close collaboration with the Franciscan Friars who serve the parish. During his sixteen year tenure, he significantly expanded the church’s sacred music program, cultivated multiple choirs, and oversaw the installation of a 1977 Schantz organ, complementing the church’s historic Austin gallery organ.
In addition to his parish and cathedral ministry, Dr. Löfvall is Artistic Director of Joyful Noise Inc., leading Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, ensembles widely recognized for artistic excellence, education, and international touring. He was appointed Music Director of the Litchfield County Choral Union in 2024, continuing the ensemble’s 126 year tradition of community based choral music.
Dr. Löfvall is a member of the Roman Catholic Conference of Cathedral Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, and the American Choral Directors Association. He is in demand as a choral clinician, adjudicator, and presenter, and has performed and conducted throughout the Americas and Europe.
His work reflects a deep commitment to the sacred liturgy, choral artistry, and the enduring power of music to serve faith, community, and prayer.
